Will we be welcome with our dog?

by Carla

We are planning a day in Steveston on Saturday, if the weather is nice. We are bringing our 7-month-old German Shepherd and staying at the pet friendly Accent Inn. We want to be sure we are able to bring our dog with us when we visit your area. We realize there are limitations but, can we visit the docks and walk along the streets with him. We want to be sure we are welcome. Can you provide me with that information?

Thanks for asking, Carla. Walking around the village with your dog is not an issue, as long as you pick up after him/her. There are a few signs around that dispense doggie-do bags, like on Imperial Landing Park and Boardwalk, just east of the pump station at No. 1 Road and Bayview Street. Neither Steveston Park or Garry Point Park are off-leash parks, however, dogs are allowed. Off-leash info can be found here: http://www.richmond.ca/parksrec/ptc/parks/offleash.htm.

Of course, dogs, other than certified assistance dogs, are not allowed in most shops and restaurants. There are a few eateries where your pet can remain with you while you're eating (outside): Pago's at the Wharf, Pajo's in the Park, Oasis Cafe (all seasonal), as well as Dave's Fish & Chips take-out tables, to name a few.

The Public Fish Sales Floats at Fisherman's Wharf are off limits for dogs, but there are plenty of places where you can secure your pet overlooking the floats.

Also, stop by Romainia Country Breads on Moncton Street and introduce yourselves to Nick, the human, and Mick, his elderly dog. Ask Mick to "speak," always a hoot. Nick doesn't require an similar command.

Enjoy,

Dave Davis
