2006, Another Great Year!

Steveston Seabreeze Adventures finds yet another successful whale watching season winding down as the weather, and the whales become somewhat less predictable. What a great year 2006 was, in terms of sightings and weather conditions. With the successful sightings in the mid-90% range, we have proven once again that whale watching from historic Steveston Village is second to none.

Our Southern Resident Orca population were frequent visitors to our operating area this season, with J- K- and L- pods being together a great deal of the time—"Super Pod." On the few occasions when the whales decided to go on vacation, we were fortunate enough to be visited by groups of Transient Orcas. Transient Orcas are known to be stealthy and silent hunters, and usually travel in small groups of 2 to 4 animals. This year was exceptional, in that the transient groups often numbered from 12 to 15 animals, with behavior more akin to our resident Orcas behavior.

One surprise for 2006 was the absence of Dahls porposies, which was quite unusual for our playful friends. The Dahls did show up again in the later part of the summer, and were even more playful than normal.

The Stellar sea lions have returned recently, with 57 animals counted on a recent trip to the Bell Island chain. There was no shortage of Harbor Seals, as anyone out on the water can attest to.

Our Bald Eagle population was very strong this year, with most of the birds remaining here all summer. Stay tuned for Spring 2007! Cheers and have a great New Year.

Calm Seas... Great sightings,

Captain Rick
