What's Up With Whales! March 31, 2006Another Whale Watching Season Arrivesby Rick Thompson
Hard to believe that another whale watching season is upon us. I look forward, with great anticipation, to the 2006 season, hoping that it proves to be as exciting as the previous year. I have received numerous reports of grey whale sightings recently, and have expected these sightings as the grey’s start their annual migration north. Our Southern Resident Orca pod was sighted on several different occasions in the Gulf of Georgia, and in the waters off Victoria and Bellingham. They have not yet settled into their regular seasonal pattern of following the Fraser River salmon migration, as the salmon return to spawn. The sea lions returned to the Sand Heads jetty, at the mouth of the Fraser River, with twelve being sighted recently, and more arriving daily, as they feast on the recent herring runs. Also sighted on one of our recent fishing trips, were eighteen bald eagles, with more arriving as they await the return of the ooligan, and early salmon run to the Fraser River. As you can see, Steveston is the ideal place to view these majestic animals in their natural environment, as well as enjoy the rich history, and diverse nature of Steveston Village itself. That’s about all the news I have for now, but as the season progresses, I am sure we will have many more surprises in store. Bye for now!
Calm Seas... Great sightings,
