What's Up With Whales! April 4, 2007Interesting Winter... Bright Season AheadAnother whale watching season is getting under way. It was an interesting winter with a grey whale swimming up the Fraser River and hanging around. K-pod and L-pod are vacationing in California and a new born in L-pod.
We've been out on tours a little earlier than our normal April 1st start date due to some special group requests. J-pod has remained around all winter and was spotted periodically over the past few weeks. The number of California sea lions is growing over the past few weeks at Sand Heads, and on the other side of the Gulf of Georgia, the stellar sea lions are present in large numbers. There are lots of bald eagles present in the lower Fraser River at this time, with lots of juveniles. We've had good sightings of Dall’s and harbor porpoises, with the Dall’s being very active. And of course, there's no shortage of harbor seals around. There's been sightings of minke whales and transient killer whales recently, as well as reports of a grey whale in the area. There are rumors of a false killer whale being sighted around the Tsawwassen area... Could it be Wee-Willy has returned?
That’s about all the news we have for now. We look forward to a great whale watching season for 2007, and wonder what new developments we will encounter this season? Hope to see you all onboard, soon!
Calm Seas... Great sightings,
