The Fraser River is subject to flooding at times. It’s extremely flat here, with Steveston and the surrounding area of Richmond on a large island within the flood plain. Richmond has built dykes around Lulu Island, called Dyke Road in places and Dyke Trail in others, which is enjoyed by cyclists and pedestrians alike. On a nice Thursday, a couple of times a year, we will go to Richmond to walk the dyke. There are spectacular views of the mountains, both on the mainland and on Vancouver Island, but it was very hazy this Thursday. My shots are of some of the things I saw on this walk. We came across the Steves' family farm (see slideshow below), which coexists with suburban houses on three sides and Sturgeon Banks on the west side. Belted galloways are very good milk cows, but you can buy a steer for beef, if you are so inclined. The Steves also produce seed for the Heritage Seed Program, which preserves heirloom and endangered seeds of fruits, grains and herbs. Steveston is a great place to walk, bike or fly a kite. So, the next time you're hungry for some fresh air and great scenery, come down the the southwest corner of Richmond to enjoy the history and charm of Steveston. ![]()
