You Gotta Have Flowers

Of course, no wedding is worth its salt without gorgeous floral arrangements dripping from every corner and corsages on every member of the wedding party. So, whether you need corsages, grandiose arrangements, or both, Super Grocer and Pharmacy may be able to help. Yes, Super Grocer has an inhouse floral department and would likely be a budget choice. So, don't forget flowers, which add their beauty and fragrance to that perfect wedding.

Photography, Film & Videography

Photography is another must when planning a wedding, and Steveston is well served by photographers, film makers and videographers. Of these, is Horizon Wedding Films, who work with only about 8~10 couples per year to create very unique, custom, one of a kind wedding films. This often involves the use of their old film cameras, but often also includes using very unique camera angles and perspectives. They travel on a regular basis to film their clients' weddings abroad. Just this past year they filmed weddings in Prague, Paris and Hawaii. "Most or our clients are couples who want the opposite of what a 'traditional' wedding video is known for, and have significant budgets set aside to have such a film created." Another Steveston filmmaker is Marliss Productions, who produce beautiful documentary-style movies with a unique style. Able to shoot in 16 mm film, or with high-definition video (16:9 - 1080i), Marliss Productions offers a truly unique service.

Photographer's camera and slides

There's a couple new photographers in the village, first Brechin Maclean, of Brechin Maclean Photography, who promises to be reliable and unobtrusive, while artistically capturing the emotional moments of your day. Brechlin combines a candid documentary style with traditional portraiture. Just recently, Sandra Streier, of Sandra Steier Photography notified me of her presence in Steveston. Sandra has come to be known for her "clean" signature style, with a flare for fashion and a photojournalistic eye. Then, at the other end of the scale is long-time Richmond portrait photographer, Mary Jensen, of Artisan Photography. Mary, MPA, F/PPABC, has been creating portraits that are as unique as her subjects since 1986.

Choosing A Videographer for The Wedding

David Cooperstone, owner of The Studio Video Facilities, offers this advice in selecting a video service and what you should ask your potential wedding videographer.

  • Is the Videographer available on the day of your wedding?
  • Figure out what kind of coverage that you would want. i.e. entire day, ceremony only, reception, edited, unedited.
  • How do they present themselves, their appearance, their attitude, approach?
  • Do they possess the necessary equipment to be professional?
  • Do they have references to show you from satisfied clients? How about references from other sources such as associations, BBB, and from within the industry itself.
  • Are they using up-to-date camera and editing equipment? Do they use lights, tripods, proper sound equipment and wireless microphones?
  • Are you talking to, and meeting with, the actual Videographer who will be taping your wedding?
  • What is their background and experience?
  • Do you personally get a good feeling from them?
  • How do they dress for the wedding?
  • What exactly are you getting? Ask these questions:
  1. Duration of videotaping?
  2. How many cameras?
  3. Does the videographer have an assistant?
  4. What style does the Videographer have... Documentary, Hollywood, etc.?
  5. Do you get to choose the effects, titles and music?
  6. Do you get the original footage?
  7. How many copies on DVD do you get?
  8. Do you get a highlight/recap DVD and what does it include?
  9. When will the tape be ready, and is it written down in the form of a contract or letter of agreement?
  10. Are the costs clearly spelled out and what are the terms?
  11. What about taxes.

Finally view their demo reel. It may be advisable to ask to view clips from the last wedding they have taped.

Salon & Spa Services to Be
at Your Best For The Big Day

Steveston does pretty well in the salon, spa and barbershop department, with almost 20 salons and barbershops and a half-a-dozen spas. Planning on making a hair color change for your big day? "Do it 6 to 8 weeks prior to your wedding day," says Marlene Heroux, owner of H2O Hair & Nail Co. Marlene continues with this advice: "This will allow you to make any changes without compromising the condition of your hair. Reserve appointments months ahead of time. It's never to early to book your stylist, esthetician and nail tech. (Wedding season is a busy time for salons). Coordinate your appointments and consultations, 2 to 3 weeks before your wedding day, and the week prior have your waxing and facial done. One to two days before, have your nails and pedicure done. And on your big day, you are going to glow with the help of your make-up artist and stylist. Also, check with out-of-town guests to see if they need appointments for their hair. Be sure what you choose, as style & make-up reflects your personality. If butterflies get in the way of a proper breakfast, have someone whip up a nutritious fruit smoothie. Enjoy your memories." A longtime village favorite, is the traditional Steveston Barbers. With history and memorabilia galore, Steveston Barbers is a favorite among locals.

Steveston has some lovely day spas, so if you wish to pamper yourself before or after the wedding, here are a few suggestions. Do try out Barbara and her friendly staff at B & D Spa right in the village. Outside the village on No. 2 Road is Raintree Day Spa, a lovely spa with a multitude of products and services to help you look and feel your best.

So, as you can see, Steveston is well served by unique services of interest to those planning a wedding.
