the letter After three years of fundraising and anticipation under overcast skys and light rain, the $1.24-million Steveston Water Park was opened. This is part of Steveston Park at Moncton and No. 1 Road.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie along with John Dang, from the Province of British Columbia, cut the ribbon on Saturday at 11 am. Before the ribbon cutting, Mayor Brodie, gave a short speech.

The event also featured taiko drumming performances, arts and crafts, face-painting and free hot dogs, free balloons, courtesy of the Steveston Community Society. Even though there was a light rain once the ribbon was cut, the water was turned on and a number of youngsters ran through the various water sprays and seemed to have a great time. I saw one youngster shivering a little.

The Steveston Water Park is marine-themed with several interactive spray elements where children working together can change the flow of water. There are separate areas for preschool and school-aged children, with the preschool area having more gentle, ground spray and misting features.

Steveston Water Park hours will be from 9:30am to 9:30pm. Some of the rules that have to be observed are: 1) Do not drink the water; 2) No dogs at anytime; 3) No food or beverages.

The water park is larger than the King George Water Park. It is universally accessible and use of the water park by children with disabilities will be further facilitated by waterproof wheelchairs donated by Rick Hansen's Wheels in Motion Society to the Steveston Community Society. There is also an accessible washroom on the park side of the Community Centre.

This project is a partnership between the City of Richmond and the Steveston Community Society, that has tirelessly been fundraising for the past three years, and has contributed $530,000 toward the project. The commitment by the Steveston Community Society to raise funding for this project was a tremendous success due to the high level of community support and incredible volunteer fundraising efforts. The City of Richmond is funding the balance of this $1.238-million project as part of the realization of the Steveston Park Vision Plan, formulated with community input and approved by Council in 2000.
