"I am terribly saddened by this event," said Ilich. "My mother attends this synagogue, and it is an important part of my community. However, I know that this act of vandalism does not represent the thoughts and feelings of the community. Richmond celebrates multiculturalism and takes pride in doing so." "This is an unbelievable act of hatred," said Yap. "I am shocked that this could happen in my community. This was clearly a racially motivated hate crime." Located in the riding of Richmond-Steveston, the Beth Tikvah Synagogue was vandalized with swastikas and other symbols of hate last Sunday. Yap continues: "As horrible a crime as this is, I know that this does not reflect the values of my community or for the City of Richmond as a whole. The people who live and work in Richmond are proud of this community's cultural mosaic and are just as outraged as I am that this could happen here." ![]()
