Since my last visit, I had moved to Victoria, then taken off to the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, where, among other ventures, I owned a restaurant near the beach and the Coral Sea. Running a top-notch restaurant is not an easy business, but the folks at the Steveston Seafood House have been doing it for decades. My party of three arrived for an early Sunday dinner. I noticed that the decor had changed since my last visit, but as that was maybe a decade ago, that's likely a good thing, I guess. Not as many sea-going artifacts as I remember, but still connected to its past, the small, intimate dining rooms with artifacts and art hear and there, and liberal use of wood paneling throughout. It exuded a warm, rustic feel to the diners beginning to slowly trickle in. Reservations are still requested for dinner, but this was likely more for the chef to be prepared for the numbers expected, than due to any shortage of tables for our early-hour dining. Once seated, the warm bread and soft butter arrived at our table, as always. I ordered a bowl of Boston Clam Chowder appetiser. I always like to give chowders, whether clam or seafood, a try whenever available. Very interesting! Tasty, too. My entree was Seared Tuna, $21.95, featuring a pepper crusted chunk of tuna, seared rare and served with a tequila, lime and mango salsa, with wasabi and whipped potatoes. I didn't find the pepper overwhelming on the tuna, but then again, I like pepper. The lime and mango salsa was a delight, a very good match to the delicate flavors of the tuna, even with the pepper. The ladies ordered Smoked Alaskan Black Cod, $22.95, basted in whole milk and served with a pineapple mango salsa, with an appetizer dish of calamari. Both dishes looked great and the cod was enjoyed by my two non western food loving companions. The service was attentive, always polite, though somewhat slow, given the number of patrons that evening. All-in-all, a pleasant dining experience at my favorite seafood restaurant. All for just over $60 for three (2 entrees and 2 appetizers, but no dessert). The Steveston Seafood House is now open for brunch on weekends.
