Steveston's History Highlighted Through BC150 Grant, Says Yap
by John Yap, MLA Richmond-Steveston
"The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is an integral part of the story of Steveston, and a perfect example of the kind of culture and history we are highlighting throughout 2008 as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of B.C.'s founding as a Crown Colony," said Yap, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. "The Gulf of Georgia Cannery celebrates our West Coast fishing heritage, and the book this grant supports will help us share that heritage with a new generation of residents and visitors." The $4,700 grant will go towards production of a book—"My Monster Cannery Adventure"—a richly illustrated children's book which follows a 10-year-old boy around 1903 Steveston and its canneries. The Province of B.C. and The British Columbia Museums Association (BCMA) have announced the recipients for the Pride in Our Communities grants program that will be helping 39 organizations in communities throughout the province highlight their history as part of the BC150 Years celebrations. The $350,000 grant program was created to help B.C.'s local museums and heritage organizations plan special exhibits and events to commemorate BC150 Years. Each project will be featured in 2008 as part of the BC150 Years celebrations, and will become a permanent part of each organization's collection. As well, local museums and heritage organizations will be able to leverage this funding to create projects totaling more than $1.6 million. The province's 535 museums, art galleries and heritage institutions attract more than seven million visitors every year, and this funding will help local arts and heritage organizations reach out to both residents and visitors. BC150 Years is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. Every community in B.C. is invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.'s cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement.
