The life-sized bronze sculpture depicting three fishing industry workers, circa 1930, will be a permanent tribute to those workers whose efforts led to the development of Steveston as the hub of the fishing industry. The sculpture will be an engaging interpretation of Steveston's social history, a perfect focal point for Steveston's historic waterfront walk.
Glenn Kishi, Chair of the Steveston High School Alumni Association, said the group plans to raise at least half the amount quickly, so the artist can start the artwork with hopes of finishing by September, 2006. That would coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Fishing Company.
Sculptor Norm Williams, and his Steveston Secondary classmate, Keith Lowes, originally proposed the sculpture. Norm will be the sculptor for this project.
"For the community, it's going to be a piece they can put on tourism brochures and make it a kind of icon for Steveston," said Glenn Kishi.
