his morning, after a restless night at the Sleep Lab at Richmond Hospital, Beth and I decided to have breakfast in the village. We arrived before 8 am on Sunday when not much is happening in the village | | ©Steveston Hotel | at this time and day, but for the Steveston Hotel Cafe. Located in the south end of the Steveston Hotel, circa 1895, the family run Steveston Hotel Cafe is steps from Steveston Harbour and across the street from the historic—1894—Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.
The cafe serves up classic breakfast fair, such as three-egg omelets, pancakes, French toast and various eggs and bacon or sausages. For lunch, they offer perennial favorites, such as fish and chips, beef dip, hamburgers, and various sandwiches and wraps. Nothing pretentious here, with period decor and ample servings at reasonable prices. We were both hungry, so I started off with a bottomless cup of coffee ($1.85), to be followed with an order of Steveston Benny. Bethie abstained from ordering coffee, as she's 7-months pregnant and being a good girl. A Steveston twist on standard eggs benedict, Steveston Benny ($9.95), has fresh shrimp instead of ham served with hash browns. Beth went for the half order of pancakes ($5.25), after being recommended by our friendly server. Now, I'm not a big fan of drip coffee, but the coffee was hot and flavorful and did I mention... bottomless! Everything was served in good time by our friendly and attentive server. | | ©Steveston Hotel |
When the goodies arrived, Beth's "half order" turned out to be two plate-sized pancakes garnished with an orange slice. I got a delectable plate of shrimp benny, hash browns also with an orange slice garnish. I did say the portions were hardy. We both dug in with relish, Beth loving her pancakes, which she enjoyed with butter and maple syrup. My Steveston Benny, with a tasty hollandaise sauce and just right shrimp was equally enjoyable. Although I like the "brown" on hash browns, mine were somewhat over browned and quite crunchy, but not oily and still tasty. Beth manage to down one flapjack, which makes her a one-quarter order kinda girl. I finished all but a few hash browns, so for less than $18.00, we both had excellent breakfasts with enough to take home for yet another meal. So, whenever you're in Steveston Village and hankering for a hardy breakfast or lunch at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong pulling your chair up to a table at the Steveston Hotel Cafe... Highly recommended. The Steveston Hotel Cafe opens at 7 am daily for breakfast and lunch. Outside seating.
