A Blustery Winter Day at Steveston Harbour

A family visits Steveston Harbour on a blustery winter day to net some fishing gear and great photos of fishing boats and pleasure craft safely moored here.

Kent, Pop and I drove to Steveston today for Kent to pick up a couple of prawn traps and some new fishing gear—it's never too early to get ready for boating season. Nikka Marine has a great selection of everything imaginable to do with boating and fishing, as well as a good book section. Kent bought the items he needed while I quickly walked the block peeking into a few interesting stores.

The wind came gusting in, pushing me around, rattling the rooftops, signposts and awnings and people on the street scurried to shelter. I decided the truck was a safer place to wait, with Pop, in case anything blew off a roof or along the sidewalk. We've had more than our share of wind storm damage in the last 2 months and I, as well as most BC'ers are learning to be cautious.

Steveston is a quaint little fishing village, but is evolving into a tourist destination with it's fabulous restaurants, funky stores and wharves full of every type of fishing boat and pleasure boat imaginable. It has also grown tremendously in the recent years - with many, many condos, townhomes and single family residences, just a block or so from the Fraser River, some with great views, easy access to the freeway into Vancouver and the joy of small town living. If you want to see a genuine fishing village, this is the place.

You will see on this map of Steveston where the government wharf is situated. Kent drove us out to the end of the wharf so I could take a few photos. The wind was howling and I could barely stand up against it, but I wanted a few clear shots without the railing. The wind buffetted me and the camera to the point I was a little concerned about safety so hurriedly took shots of the various seiners, trollers, trawlers, gillnetters, prawn boats and pleasure boats.

The wharf was practically deserted, and I only saw one boat coming in. It just wasn't a good day to be on the water, but it was a wonderful day to watch it being whipped up by the wind. As you will see by the number of photos. I do love boats!
