Steveston Community Centre Celebrates 50 Years!

The Steveston Community Centre will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a 50's style hop on Saturday, November 3, 2007 from 8:00 pm to midnight. The centre's gymnasium will be transported back in time to the days of greasers, lettermen, poodle skirts, angora sweaters and pedal pushers for a special evening of reminiscence and dancing to juke box favourites. Guys and gals are encouraged to come dressed for the era for a chance to win a prize. Tickets are only $10 and include admission to the hop and free concession; there will be a no host bar.

The Steveston Community Society was originally founded in 1891 as the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society, known affectionately as "The AG," and is still in existence today under the care of the Steveston Community Society. The Steveston Community Society was established in 1944 and its objectives read, in part, "to promote the establishment and development of a community centre in Steveston."

The Steveston Community Centre was officially opened on November 2, 1957 by the Hon. Leslie Peterson, Provincial Minister of Education and Reeve E.R. Parsons. The Steveston Community Society worked tirelessly for 10 years raising over $40,000 for the building.
