he sheer boom that used to filter out logs and wood debris from Steveston Harbour has been fixed... for now! An additional boom running from the east end of Steveston Island to the shore has also been put in place.

This week, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans replaced about 1,000 feet of horizontal log booms that once acted as a gate.
Gordon Kibble, who has been trying for a decade to get the federal government to take responsibility for the sheer boom, said he is "over the moon" to learn it has been fixed.
With the possibility of a larger flood flow this year on the Fraser, it was important that this work be done quickly. Concerns about the lack of protection from wood debris carried on the Fraser River have been amplified this year due to concerns that a heavy snow pack will result in heavy river flows once the spring thaw begins.
There will now be a sigh of relief by the boat owners and operators. They will be safe for one more year. The protection for Steveston Harbour must be maintained and repaired as necessary, as it is vital to the safety for the harbor and the boats in it.
Steveston Harbour is home to Canada's largest fishing fleet, as well as some pleasure and commercial craft.
