Salmon Stomp 2009 Schedule

by K. Lee
(Steveston, BC Canada)

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society is presenting Salmon Stomp 2009 this Saturday. With its wide range of activities, Salmon Stomp will appeal to people of all ages. Join them for great music, dancing and a fine foot-stomping time.

The event will run from 12 noon to 9 pm and admission will be free thanks to the sponsorship of G & F Financial Group.

  • 12:00 - The Swagmen are instrumental rock musicians who love to entertain. Their sound is both melodic and rich. If you like surf standards like Pipeline and Apache, or loungy type tunes such as Walkin’ and Wonderful Land, then the chances are you’ll enjoy the Swagmen.

  • 1:00 - M’Girl’s harmonies incorporate the sounds of R&B, blues, folk/roots, house and world beat with traditional Aboriginal melodic phrasing, songforms and rhythms. The message in the music is an emergence of cultural ideals and worldviews from the perspectives of their Metis/Cree (Nêhiyawin), Ojibway and Mohawk backgrounds.

  • 2:00 - Kutapira is forging new links between the traditions of Zimbabwe’s marimba music and the rhythmic soul of Afro Cuban drumming. Kai Buchan, Jeremy Bryant, Sangito Bigelow, Chris Couto and Theo Vincent are all fluent in both disciplines; rotating through their battery of soprano, tenor and baritone marimbas and trading licks on the drum kit, timbales and hand drums.

  • 2:30 - Fraser River Fiddlers, directed by Lorraine Grescoe, are a group of young fiddlers with a love for the toe-tapping music that has been handed down from early pioneers — the jigs, reels, waltzes, and great train music.

  • 3:00 - Headwater is like listening to the West Coast of Canada in song. Freewheeling, fierce, sentimental and sexy, the Vancouver quartet has earned its reputation as one of the finest acoustic roots groups around. Since forming in 2001, the group has logged in thousands of kilometers criss-crossing Western Canada.

  • 4:15 - T. Nile was awarded the title of “Best New/Emerging Artist” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, as well as being named “Critic’s Favorite New Discovery” in Penguin Eggs, and in late 2007, Nile was nominated for “Best Contemporary Vocalist” once again at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

  • 5:00 - Dave Adnams’s music offers pure and honest vocals combined with compelling acoustic guitar. His poetic lyrics capture the ear and resonate in the heart. Dave’s debut EP, Dave Adnams, was released in early 2008. Dave is developing a following with his dynamic, live acoustic shows.

  • 5:30 - Eire Born Irish Dancers will demonstrate their remarkable skills and teach basic steps.

  • 6:30 - Doghouse’s current line-up has many years of combined talent and experience to draw from, and has proved popular at each appearance. The band manages to keep people’s feet tapping with its varied performance of songs and music wherever it plays. Although billed as a Celtic folk band, Doghouse is very diverse and can add country and jazz flavours to its repertoire.

All events at Gulf of Georgia Cannery NHSC, 12138 4th Avenue, Steveston Village.
