Richmond’s Doors Open Offers 40 Free Venues this Weekend
For art lovers, a bike or the pedestrian friendly Canada Line provides easy access to major public art displays around the City. Volunteer guides will help visitors on their journey. Featured are the Vancouver Biennale’s six temporary grand scale sculptures located around the City. In the mix is Richmond’s own public art, and together they offer visuals from the spectacular to the curious, to the playful and the controversial. For the culturally curious, the Vancouver International Buddhist Progress Society Temple is a hidden gem. Situated on the eighth floor of a parkade in the centre of Richmond, this temple, with its Buddha Hall and tea house, seems visible only to those who know of its presence. Heritage hounds will enjoy a rare opportunity to board the Steveston Interurban Tram. Built in 1913, it carried passengers from Vancouver to Steveston until February 1958. Architectural buffs won’t want to miss a tour of Richmond’s Hamilton Fire Hall. A LEED Gold Certified leader in energy and environmental design, it features a large green roof, a solar wall, and rooftop rainwater collections system. Visitors to Terra Nova Rural Park can get dirty and experience Richmond’s natural and cultural landscape through fun, interactive activities hosted by the City’s Parks Department. On Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Terra Nova Schoolyard Society and the Richmond Fruit Tree Sharing Project will share the wonders of urban agriculture. Peace can be found at St. Alban’s interfaith labyrinth that forms a sacred path of interlocking brick designed after Chartres Cathedral in France. Volunteers will offer workshops on labyrinths and their history and benefits. While the majority of the sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, visitors are encouraged to check the site map schedule, available at City facilities. A complete listing of participating sites and more information can be found at http://www.stevestonivillage.com/support-files/flyer.doorsopen2010.pdf. This free event is made possible through generous support from the City of Richmond, Government of Canada, Richmond Museum Society, British Columbia Arts Council, the Vancouver Airport Authority, Richmond Review, Richmond Spirit of BC and Tourism Richmond.
