All the crew and support staff in this non-government-funded service are volunteers, who dedicate much of their efforts to support of the local fishing fleet. The boat was built in Pearl Harbor in 1944 as the launch for Admiral Nimitz. John Horton, a Steveston resident, marine artist, and lifeboat Commander, purchased it in 1988, renaming it Artist's Life. It underwent an extensive refit and has recently been reclassified as the Steveston Lifeboat. The crew has participated in over 650 rescues. The tall masts in the background belong to the tall ship S.V. Concordia.
