Richmond Pocket Market comes to Steveston

Richmond Pocket Markets launched their first market in front of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery two Sundays ago. Just a 10 x 10 tent with fresh, local produce and a couple friendly volunteers selling to eager buyers.

The Pocket Market is a welome addition to the village, given our Farmers' Market is biweekly for '09, and the Pocket Markets run alternate Sundays.

The Richmond Pocket Markets provide locally-grown produce at sites that are accessible and don't require locals to drive long distances. Richmond farmers currently grow a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, but locals can only access these farms by driving long distances to the outskirts of the city.

By promoting local produce, the market will reduce the food miles associated with imported produce, as well as decrease the need for driving around Richmond.

The market is an initiative of the Richmond Food Security Society with net proceeds going to the Richmond Food Bank.

The markets in 2009 are located at the following locations:

Richmond Hospital Lobby 10am - 3pm
Richmond Cultural Center 9am - 2pm
Gulf of Georgia Cannery 10am - 3pm (alternate Sundays to Steveston Farmers' & Artisans' Market)
