Richmond 2009 BC Seniors Games
by Dave Davis
Richmond's bid was developed by Richmond Sports Council, the collective body of the city's sports groups. Directed by a community volunteer board, the games will be supported by over 1,200 event volunteers, as 40 community groups work together to showcase our city. The purpose of the BC Seniors Games is to promote activity and wellness amongst BC's seniors. As Canada's healthiest city, with an average life span of 83 years, Richmond epitomizes the games' objectives of seniors' health and wellness. These games will leave tangible improvements to sports and activity facilities for our seniors. There will be 29 sports in the games, e.g., softball, soccer, track and field, curling, golf, table tennis, badminton, horseshoes, cribbage, darts, and square dancing. Richmond's selections as demonstration sports are pickleball, dragon boat racing, and long-track speed skating. Events will be held in venues city wide, with some right here in Steveston. All participants will be 55 years of age or older, qualifying for teams representing 13 BC regions. Richmond has excellent facilities in all disciplines. The new Richmond Olympic Oval will be the stunning centre-piece of events, including registration and the dinner. For more information check out the Games website.
