EVENTS: Summer Fun Heats up Steveston in August
Headlining the fun is a free, sunset concert on Saturday, August 21 at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard. Great sounds from around the world will feature the rollicking, Celtic-flavoured music of Wheat In The Barley; the rhythmic African beats of Rwandan multi-instrumentalist and singer Ezra Kwizera; and a performance by bluegrass favourites Redgrass will be featured beginning at 5:30 p.m. The free concert is part of the inaugural Steveston Dragon Boat Festival at Britannia Heritage shipyard, which is being held on August 21 and 22 in conjunction with the 7th annual Richmond Maritime Festival. With two days of racing, this new event will give dragon boat enthusiasts a chance to warm up their paddles and test their skill, while enjoying a fun-filled festival in the historic and beautiful surroundings of the Britannia Heritage Shipyard. Special attractions include an Adventure Race pitting dragon boat, canoe, kayak and inflatable boat. Newcomers can also try their hand at dragon boating or take it a step further by training Saturday and competing in a race on Sunday. Check out the traditional dragon eye-dotting ceremony on Saturday morning or dance the night away at a special free concert on Saturday night. A special fundraising barbecue will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday with proceeds to the Richmond Food Bank and the Steveston Museum’s “Japanese Hospital” project. Site admission is free to the general public. To take part or find out more details visit www.dragonboatbc.ca. The 7th annual Richmond Maritime Festival runs from August 20-22 with free fun for the whole family, including live entertainment, food from around the world, hands-on nautical displays and activities, and a floating showcase of historic and unique boats. Other highlights include three days of children’s activities including face painting, pirate hat making and pirate tattoos, roaming pirates and mascots, maritime exhibitors and demonstrations including knot tying, rope making, model boat building and net mending. Tasty food and beverages will also be available. The public will also be invited to visit the shipyard’s numerous historical buildings, which features engaging displays and interactive activities depicting life in the West Coast fishing industry a century ago. The Richmond Maritime Festival runs from Friday, August 20, noon – 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free.
