EVENT: Steveston Celebrates Summer With Maritime Festival and Dragon Boat Festival

A good way to cool off on a hot summer day is to take a walk along the water. This weekend there will be even more to see along the water in Steveston.

The 7th annual Richmond Maritime Festival and the inaugural Steveston Dragon Boat Festival are being held at Britannia Heritage shipyard on Saturday, August 21 and Sunday, August 22.

Steveston Dragon Boat Festival will give dragon boat enthusiasts a chance to test their skill. Special attractions include an Adventure Race pitting dragon boat, canoe, kayak and inflatable boat. Newcomers can also try their hand at dragon boating or take it a step further by training Saturday and competing in a race on Sunday. A special fundraising barbecue will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday with proceeds to the Richmond Food Bank and the Steveston Museum’s “Japanese Hospital” project. The 7th annual Richmond Maritime Festival offers free fun for the whole family, including live entertainment, hands-on nautical displays and activities, and a floating showcase of historic and unique boats. Other highlights include face painting, pirate hat making and pirate tattoos, roaming pirates and mascots, maritime exhibitors and demonstrations including knot tying, rope making, model boat building and net mending. Tasty food and beverages will also be available.

A special Musical Expressions concert will be held on Friday, August 20 at 6 pm featuring Bob Kemmis, Bruce Coughlan and Cherelle Jardine. Tickets are $25 per person.

The Richmond Maritime Festival runs from Friday, August 20, noon – 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is free. The Britannia Heritage Shipyard, a national historic site, is located at 5180 Westwater Drive (at the south foot of Railway Avenue).
