Disabled visitor wants to know more about Steveston parking

by Paula

A group of us are going to Steveston on Monday the 14th of August. We will be visiting Treasure Cottage at 3800 Moncton Street for starters. My question is, I'm disabled and would like to know where I can park. If you would be so gracious as to tell me where I'd find parking and maybe other stores that may be around Treasure Cottage so that I'm not hunting for hours would be greatly appreciated. Yours, Truly Paula

Thanks for asking, Paula. First off, I, too, am disabled—muscular dystrophy/wheelchair user—so I can relate. Was planning to write an access page soon, so now I may just get to it. First off, Monday is not a good day, as some shops are closed on Monday. The good news is that there will be lots of parking, some right in the village near where you are going. As I live here, I don't know the details of parking, re time limits, as I always wheel to the village.

I called Treasure Cottage and the Hospital Auxillary Thrift Shop, and both will be open on the Monday of your visit. Was told the parking behind them and other Moncton Street shops is limited to 2 hours, but "not enforced." There's also street parking, with Steveston's first accessible parking spot next to the Steveston Museum/Post Office which, I'm proud to say, was installed by the city at my request over 15 years ago. There is now designated parking for the disabled throughout the village.

Do visit the museum, as it's directly across the street, but the top floor is not w/c accessible, but there's stuff to see on the ground floor, too.

From the middle of the village, you will be within 2 blocks of 98% of the stuff. Most cafes and restaurants will be open and some shops. Here's a short list of similar shops nearby, with parking all around. Monday parking shouldn't be a problem, but for the duration—2 hrs. This is a common problem for all on sunny weekends, so I'm going to research this further beyond my needs, which is not at all.
