Determine Ahead of Time What Seafood is Being Sold Off the Boats

My wife and I really enjoy visting Steveston throughout the year. We usually try to hit the wharf to purchase salmon (specifically Sockeye) and other kinds of seafood. However, the last few times that we drove to Steveston there wasn't many fishers selling off-boat fish. My question to you, "Is there some way that we can find out when sockeye salmon or halibut is being sold?" My wife and I enjoy Steveston. We will walk through the shops, have lunch, visit the museums and knowing when certain types of fish are available at the wharf would help us select the times to visit Steveston; kind of like killing two birds with one stone. Whatever information you can provide us would greatly be appreciated.line

Here's a couple helpful resources for you

Good question, Howard. I just called the folks in the know, the Steveston Harbour Authority. They have a Catch of the Day feature on their home page, which lists fish for sale at Fisherman's Wharf. This information is emailed or phoned in by the fishers, so if the fishers don't tell them, they can't post this info. Although public fish sales at the Public Fish Sales Float at Fisherman's Wharf can happen at any time, my experience as a resident, and frequent straight-from-the-fishers buyer is, that the weekends are your best bet is Friday thru Sunday (this was concurred by Pat at the local DFO), as the flush of people visiting on weekends tends to draw more fishers to the Public Fish Sales Float.

Now, something about species being sold. Most fishing seasons vary by specie, region and year. So, even if a specie you want to buy may not be in season locally, the fishers often obtain fish from other areas that are in season at the time. So, to add a little more certainty to what is the catch-of-the-day at the Public Fish Sales Float, visit the Steveston Harbour Authority site, the info you need is on the home page.

You can also call the folks at the local Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who have kindly offered to personally go to Fisherman's Wharf to see if there are any fishers selling and what is being sold. You may contact them at 604-664-9250.
