Concert on the Boardwalk for worthy cause

by Dave McArthur
(Steveston, BC Canada)

Steveston Folk Guild is hosting a "Concert on the Boardwalk" at Steveston Landing this Sunday afternoon August 3rd, approx. 1:00~3:30 pm. This event is to collect donations for "Walk for Breast Cancer." It’s a cause that I feel quite strongly about, having had my wife Rita go through several procedures the past couple of months, and we all know many women who have experience the same thing.

Some of my musician friends associated with SFG are turning out to help raise money and public awareness of this disease.

Steve Alexander, who is the feature performer of the "Music at the Cannery" series on August 9th will be performing, and Karen Kelm, another SFG performer, will be performing a few jazz numbers with Steve, as well as playing a set of her own.

Steve is well known in bluegrass and guitar circles as being the guitar picker’s guitar player. He has twice one the BC Guitar Flat pickers championships, and is a well respected musician. Karen has a background in big band sound, as a vocalists, and also performs in a duo called "The Neverly Sisters" with Ellen Van Der Hoevan. The Neverlys did the opening act at "Music at the Cannery" last Saturday.

Also performing will be myself with "The Dusty Hillbillys," a group of dubious repute who play a mixture of folky/celtic material laced with a bit of country.

Jody and Melanie Copple, a mother and daughter realtor team from my office at Macdonald Realty Westmar will be on hand to receive donations while the above are performing.

SFG is scheduled to do a repeat concert on Saturday, Sept 6th at the same location.

Location: Steveston Landing, Shady Island Bar & Grill area, Bayview Street (in the heart of Steveston where all the restaurants are on the boardwalk).line
