the letter Feeling a little hungry due to fasting for some lab tests, I decided it was time to reward myself and my friend, Beth, to lunch in Steveston Village. I have eaten at most cafes and restaurants here, but one I've been curious

Alegria Cafe & Giftware diners
about since its opening in 2003, but never visited, was Alegria Cafe & Giftware.

So, off we headed to Alegria Cafe at 12151 First Avenue, directly behind the Steveston Museum. On entering, you're greeted by tasteful gift ware displays, which act as a divider between the entrance and the cafe seating. The beautiful, and inviting, hardwood floor leads you past the giftware into the heart of this cozy cafe. Decorated with an eclectic mix of gift wares and art, with pumpkin colored walls, accented by other bright and inviting colors, the cafe exudes warmth. A coffee bar spanning the bright front window, and a mixture of granite-top tables fill the tiny dining area, but what grabs my eye are the simple pine chairs with artwork painted on the seats. Yes, you get to sit on some of the artwork here, but you can also settle into comfy wicker chairs, when available.

It was lunch time when we arrived, and most seats were already occupied, but for a few tables in the middle of the dining area. Being on the small side,

as mentioned above, it would have been cumbersome to navigate my large wheelchair into the available area. So, I asked a couple sitting in the wicker chairs near the kitchen if they would mind moving. They graciously agreed, and ended up asking a couple sitting near the window if they could share their table. They, too, agreed. Friendly lot, I thought to myself.

Turns out that Alegria Cafe & Giftware is under new management, with Denise and DeAnn officially taking over from former owner, Joy, on November 1st. Joy will still be conducting the yoga and similar classes in the classroom out back, via the vine-covered pergola path just past The Alegria Garden, the outdoor area where both diners, and class takers alike, enjoy during the warmer season.

Anyway, I ordered a Mexicali Wrap with a chai latte, and my friend ordered a coffee and muffin, I believe. The wrap, with 2-egg omelette, and various organic veggies, including organic salsa, wrapped in a wheat tortilla, was my lunch in-the-hand. What this "Mexicali" wrap lacked in heat—I didn't taste any salsa "heat"

whatsoever, but maybe that's the organic part or just my tolerance to 'heat'—it made up for in freshness and healthiness. No overloading one's system with more agriculture and processing chemicals, saturated fats or heart-stopping salt. A little side dish of sour cream is included, and all-in-all, I enjoyed my lunch without feeling stuffed. My chai latte (you can choose from skim or whole milk) was a good match for the wrap, being lightly spiced, hot and smooth. The wrap and latte came in under $9.00, not bad for a healthy, mostly organic lunch. Already planning my next visit, as I'm looking forward to trying out their delicious looking homemade soups.

Once I had finished my goodies, a young fellow with cerebral palsy, and his caregiver, entered the room and placed their orders. Though most of the rush-hour crowd had departed, I invited them to join us at our table... They did. We then spent the next 30 minutes or so talking as if we were long-lost friends, and when one of the new owners commented, we both replied; "Never met before." That's what the Alegria Cafe does... Makes one feel warm and fuzzy all over.

Alegria Cafe & Giftware is located at 12151 1st Avenue, Steveston Village (Richmond), BC. Tel: 604-274-1215. Wheelchair accessible.
